The powered industrial trucks standard (29 CFR 1910.178) is the most commonly cited standard in the material-handling industries. Powered industrial trucks are addressed in specific standards for the general industry, construction, marine terminals, and long shoring. This section highlights OSHA standards, Federal Register notices (rules and proposed rules), directives (instruction to OSHA staff), and letters of interpretation (official letters of interpretation of the standards) related to powered industrial trucks. This course emphasizes on hazard identification, avoidance, control, and powered industrial truck safety.

It is a violation of federal law for anyone under 18 years of age to operate a forklift or for anyone over 18 years of age who is not properly trained and certified to do so.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

The OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 powered industrial trucks standard includes specific training requirements for forklift operators who load and unload trucks. OSHA mandated that all new forklift operators must be trained and certified, regardless of experience. The new rules require that forklift training be specific to the equipment you operate and specific to the conditions under which the equipment is operated (site specific. This course meets the 29 CFR 1910.178 standard.

HOW OFTEN DO I RETRAIN OR RE-CERTIFY?

All forklift operators regardless of their experience, must be evaluated and re-trained for competency at least every three years. Prior to operating the truck in the workplace, the employer must evaluate the operator’s performance and determine the operator to be competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely.
